I think widgets would be useful to any web page. I have had the countdown gadget on my web page since day one. First to countdown my birthday (could not think of anything else to count down) then changed it to christmas, 256 more shopping days till Christmas Fern !
I just added the google calendar to my page I want to start using that. I also have the currency converter would really like to start using that one a little more often.
Just noticed the Fern/Christmas in your post... hmmm yesterday I commented on Debbie's blog that it was 8 months until Christmas. For you... today is 8 months until Boxing Day
